Welcome back. Well last week was the first week of Autumn. In Colorado, we welcomed it with a first hint of Winter. After a glorious weekend, here came cold, rain, and even snow in the mountains.
At the same time, in our credit union we were testing our plans for coping with a flu outbreak – including H1N1 – and its possible impact on our operations. It made me think: What could our members do to be prepared to keep their finances in order if they get sick or want to avoid crowds?
So here are some ideas to consider, just in case.
- Make sure you have a valid debit or credit card. It is one way for you to buy stuff without using cash which might carry germs. At many of our service centers, you can get a debit card issued instantly.
- Enroll in online banking at your FI*. Online banking can offer both information and transaction options for your accounts so you can avoid doing your business in person. Your debit card can help with this, too, at ATMs.
- Enroll in online bill pay services. Now you’re avoiding costs of check writing and mailing while managing your bills through your new online banking relationship. Plus, if the mail is slower during a flu outbreak, you’ll be sure your payments will be made on time.
- Schedule automatic alerts or notices of key events in your accounts. Now you’re putting some of your financial business on “auto-pilot.” Your FI will notify you through email (or text message) when something has happened in your account you have said you want to know about. That can include large amount deposits or withdrawals, hitting minimum or maximum balance amounts you’ve set, and similar events. Now you can take care of yourself and your loved ones without worrying that something significant could happen in your account while you’re distracted.
There are a lot of things you can do to help reduce the potential of catching the flu this season. We’re working to assure we can serve our members in a wide range of situations. What will you be doing when flu breaks out and has an impact on your FI and your community?
Now it’s your turn: What are you doing to get ready for the 2009-2010 flu season?
